Problem #5: Welcome to Times Square
Last, but not least, is what I call the Times Square Effect, a.k.a. Everything All At Once. Many sites are so lost in understanding what their users want, they just put every possible option and every imaginable ad on every page.
Every new element on a page (buttons, copy, links, ad units) competes against every other element for your users attention. Users want to focus on what they need to reach their goal on your site as quickly as possible. You want to encourage that behavior, because it makes your company more money.
When you present too much information, the page itself becomes hard to engage with -- at any level. Just looking at some of these pages makes the experience seem so overwhelming, most users will simply give up.
What’s the answer to all of your Website problems? Watch your users use your site. Give them a goal like, “Get more information about [a product] from our staff,” or “Buy this specific item.” Then see how they try to attain that goal.
You’ve looked at your own site so many times, merely watching as few as five members of your audience achieve the same simple goals will show you more than five years of trying to juggle features and functions alone, with only internal opinions and feedback.
Our staff of experienced Web usability strategists are ready to help make your site easier, more pleasing, and revenue driving than you thought imaginable.
